How To Price Yourself Competitively

freelance connection Jun 24, 2021

This is a question I get quite frequently. How do I know where to set my rates? The answer is so tricky because there is so much that goes into it. There is a helpful article on Upwork about pricing yourself as a beginner, intermediate, and expert. But, this is what I recommend you do. Search your competitors and see what they’re charging.

How to search your competitors' rates:

  1. Use the search bar at the very top and search by Talent to find others in your industry. For example, “copywriter”.
  2. Start going through the results paying attention to their badge rating and job success score. Keep in mind that if you don’t have the same earnings, badges, or success score, you should price yourself a bit lower to get to that level.
  3. Scroll through and kinda get a look for what the average is. For our copywriter example, we can see a lot of prices around $50/hour.
  4. Open those profiles up and see where your skills match with theirs. Also, open up profiles that are fairly newer and see how you compare to their skills as well.

By doing this simple search technique we can see that if you’re a beginner copywriter going up to that $25-$30/hour mark is competitive. Price yourself competitively to get that job success score and some earnings to stand out. From there, go into the intermediate price point at around $50/hour, and then onto advanced at that $75-$100/hour point.

This is really dependent on how new you are to the platform. If you’re brand new then I would say to price yourself a little lower to get the things you need to stand out.

If you have any questions on pricing on Upwork and freelancing, I would be happy to answer them. Just remember you want to be competitive. You don’t want to be pricing yourself at that $35 mark if everyone else is at $100. Make sure you pay attention to what other people are doing in your space also.
